Athletes Need a Chiropractor

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

The title writes the blog. Do we need to go any further?

I will be honest, it surprises me how many athletes I run into that have never been to a chiropractor. The athletes that do come in rarely have seen a chiropractor before as well. I’d like to say it’s because of our reactive culture and why be preventative with my health when most of the options around me are typically there for after pain and injury.

Does chiropractic make this same mistake?

It’s possible our profession simply markets itself so heavily in the back and neck pain area that athletes don’t think to come in or understand the injury prevention benefits of chiropractic care.

What are the benefits?

  1. Improved Performance: Your body moves as one, not in parts and pieces. The better aligned your spine is, the better your movement will be. From bending, flexing, rotating, and creating torque, if your spine is out of alignment, then your body is going to compensate and risk injury.

  2. Injury Prevention: In our office we movement screen every athlete. We want to see that they not only have a well adjusted spine, but motor patterns that are developed and strong enough for their support. So we evaluation their flexibility, mobility, stability, and base of strength.

  3. Faster Recovery: Because of the multiple modalities we use in our office, athletes are going to recover faster from hot/cold therapy, ultrasound, deep tissue work, adjustments, and learning to reset their body with basic stretches and exercise routines.

  4. Inflammation Control: Inflammation is not always a bad thing. It is your body’s response to a need. Chiropractic has been shown to help control inflammation through adjustments and tissue work. Proper supplementation with whole food and natural options such as turmeric keep athletes off of NSAIDs that carry health risks.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Chiropractors want to help your athletes play harder, play longer, and be stronger as a result of it. Our joy comes from seeing a previously injured athlete re-enter their sport and see increased performance without any new injuries.

If you are ready to see a Chiropractor, or want to get your son our daughter under care, now is a great time. Contact our office Moulton Chiropractic at (817) 251-7250 to schedule their evaluation.

Will Stretching Help My Back Pain?

If you have ever had back pain that stops you in your tracks, then you understand…

We live in a society where back pain plagues the every day person. Whether it’s from an injury, accident, or really just from being stuck in front of the computer too often. Back pain is never fun to deal with, and it’s where a Chiropractor can shine. Chiropractic and back pain go together like peanut butter and jelly, it works so well, and quickly. Most of the time, when a patient comes in for back pain, the issue is resolved in just a few visits!

But, what about other options for back pain? What can a patient do between visits to help accelerate and amplify the success of their treatment?

Ready for this…

STRETCH!

Seems like we all know we should be doing it, yet none of us do, and it’s quite an un-motivating task to accomplish.

The fact is this, stretching will help your back pain, especially when it’s paired with Chiropractic adjustments.

Here are a few of our favorite stretches we give patients:

Crocodile Breathing

Breathing is foundational to eliminating pain. If you don’t breathe properly, then we have some issues we need to correct. The way you breathe relates to the way you stabilize your spine and hold your posture. If those things are off, of course your back will hurt. Give this breathing drill a try and then try it in different positions.

The Brettzel Stretch

This may be the holy grail of stretches. There are two variations to this stretch, the brettzel 1 and brettzel 2. Both are big, full body, spiral stretches that are going to unwind your tension from head to toe. Be sure to maintain proper breathing and relax into these positions.

The Cobra Flow

Movement is life. What is stretching if it’s not going to help us move better. The movement is also key to turning muscles on and strengthening our body so the joints lubricate, stabilize themselves, and ultimately take pressure off of our spines. Give this “flow” or chain of movements a try and work on smoothing it out with proper breathing, and slow steady purposeful movements.

Can Chiropractic Help Joint Pain?

Can Chiropractic Help Joint Pain?

Do you or someone you know suffer from joint pain? I think we all have at some points in our lives either from injuries, accidents, or weakness in our bodies. Did you know that Chiropractic is extremely effective in treating joint pain and getting rid of the pain altogether?

Chiropractic has many benefits, but for those with joint pain, we truly should be the first doctor you speak to. Not only is it conservative, non-invasive, it is incredibly effective.

Listen here to hear Dr. Kael share why Chiropractic helps joint pain so much:

Benefits of chiropractic for those with joint pain:

  1. Slowing and improved healing of degeneration.

  2. Increased range of motion.

  3. Increase in flexibility.

  4. Decrease in inflammation.

  5. Decrease in daily pain.

You can imagine, with these benefits, why wouldn’t everyone see a Chiropractor? That is the same question we ask ourselves! But the only way to do that, is if you, our devoted reader, share this post with all of your friends and family!

Did you know that Chiropractic is THE best place to start?

Researchers and studies have shown time and time again that Chiropractic is the best conservative care for our bodily aches and pains, including joint pain, most of all lower back pain.

Can Chiropractic Get Rid of My Headache?

head-pain-exhausted-young-woman-has-suffering-from-unbearable-headache.jpg

Headaches and Migraines

Something that many of us have struggled with at some point in our life, and sadly something that some of us deal with every single day. If you’ve not suffered from a migraine, or a severe headache, I hope you never have to.

Bright lights, loud sounds, any extra stimulus other than eyes closed, in a silent dark room, are extremes that only amplify the pain. Where is the hope? Sure you can try OTC (over the counter) medications, oils, massage techniques, or even prescription strength pain killers. But, in our experiences they cut the edge at best, and never provide a long lasting relief.

I myself, grew up with terrible migraines, something the doctors couldn’t put their fingers on. Was it because of my eyes? Was it stress and tension? Truth be told, I didn’t have the greatest home life growing up, so its very plausible. What is a food sensitivity or allergy? Was I grinding my teeth, clenching my jaw? All the paths lead to a big fat question mark.

Until…

I was taken to a Chiropractor for “unrelated” reasons, or at least we thought at the time. The doctor took the time to ask about my issues, but even more so, he asked about my entire childhood history. Any falls, trips, accidents, child birth experiences, any surgeries, scars, etc. It seemed he was concerned with more than just back pain complaint. So, I explained my asthma, my migraines, my back pain, the shin splints, and just daily fatigue.

I began Chiropractic care for what I thought was a minor back strain from playing sports, but quickly realized there is something strange going on, something that is helping and getting rid of all my other issues. For the first time in my life I felt flexible, I had energy, my head didn’t hurt every day around the same time. I was able to run more than 50 feet without needing to suck on an inhaler. Something truly incredible was happening, and who would have ever thought I would give all the credit to my Chiropractor.

What does a Chiropractor do?

It was no secret to him, and over the years, I learned exactly what was happening, and what the doctor was treating, and it suddenly seemed to be logical, not weird voodoo work. I thought to myself, “why doesn’t everyone see a Chiropractor?” I was blown away at how amazing and impactful something so simple could be.

We could break down the science, go over the heads of the average person trying to explain mechanisms. But the reality is, Chiropractic works for one very clear reason: The doctor is more concerned with the cause of the dysfunction rather than the symptoms. When they paint an entire picture and look at your entire history, they can treat the root cause of whats going on and provide a long term solution.

So, can Chiropractic help get rid of your headaches or migraines?

A million times over, yes!

If you happen to be nerdy and into science, your doctor can explain every little detail to you, well, at least in our office. We spend private, 1-1 time with the patient, dedicated to treating them as an individual and answering their questions, and being a valuable resource for their needs.

If this is you, you want to know more, you have pain, dysfunction, injuries that you’ve put off and are just “living with” or “dealing with”, don’t wait any longer. Call today, go online and schedule your appointment today.

Insurance, Medicare & Chiropractic?

Let’s start with private insurance…

A question we get quite often is: “Do you take insurance?”

The short answer: Yes.

The truth? It depends.

Not all insurance is the same… Welcome to the Jungle 😐

Not all insurance is the same… Welcome to the Jungle 😐

Depends? Depends on what?

Well, each insurance provider such as Blue Cross, United, Cigna, etc all operate as a separate entity. And even within those names will be many different groups. Each provider, and each group under that provider have different premiums, deductibles, copays/coinsurances, benefits, and limitations.

So, do we accept your insurance? Sure. But a better plan between the two of us, would be for me to look up the specific plan and benefits your insurance provides you. Then after we gather all the details we can make a decision together on whether billing your insurance or paying out of pocket is the best financial option.

Enter Medicare…

So, if you thought that was confusing, hold on tight, because Medicare can be a bit much to understand.

screaming.gif

Okay, that may have been a bit dramatic, in reality, at least in terms of Chiropractic, Medicare is quite simple.

First, the question is no longer “do you accept my insurance?”, it’s more like “are you a provider for Medicare?”. To which we would answer, YES!

Next, everyone on Medicare has a deductible that must be met before Medicare will help with any costs. That varies year to year and we are happy to tell you what that is, and how much you have left to pay when you call in! (See, not so bad so far?)

Then, Medicare will NEVER cover any type of wellness/maintenance/vitalistic whatever you want to call it care. They will cover injuries, pain, and/or dysfunction to the body. Which means, as awesome as Chiropractic is for basic preventative care, Medicare only cares, well… will only pull out the checkbook if you are actually hurt or dealing with actual pain.

Medicare is going to cover diagnosable issues to the spine and no where else. Skull to tailbone, thats it. Your Chiropractor is able to bill for any adjustment made to the spine. But, any extremities (like your shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles, etc), any physical therapy needed, are not going to be covered and will need to be paid for out of pocket (yeah, I know what you’re thinking).

Question: How do I know if I am wellness or have an actual complaint? And how will I know how many visits and how often to come?

Welcome to the next Medicare hurdle: The Exam.

So, I gave you a list of things Medicare is not going to cover, basically things outside of the spine. And we understand that Medicare is going to ONLY pay for adjustments to the spine. But there is one CRUCIAL step to starting your care, and that is the Initial Exam.

You may be asking, why are you making a big deal about the Exam, of course I would need one to actually see whats wrong with me and for the doctor to tell when what the best course of care would be?

If only it were that simple, my friend.

If only it were that simple, my friend.

Well, turns out, Medicare would disagree with you and will not be covering the costs for your exam. Which means it is necessary, but also under the list of services not covered by Medicare and will have to be paid out of pocket.

THE GOOD NEWS IS your exam is very affordable, and most offices are willing to work with patients to negotiate an affordable cost for the exam.

So we made it past the exam, and now we are into our care!

You can rest now. This difficult process is over. From here your doctor is going to provide treatment, and submit all the necessary billing to Medicare for you. The only costs you will come across at this point is your yearly deductible if it is not met, your 20% coinsurance on your adjustments, and any charges to be paid out of pocket for non-covered services like physical therapy.

What is Supplemental Insurance?

In many cases, a patient will have Medicare Plan A & B which covers their hospital and doctors visits, but also have a Plan G, or Supplemental plan. This supplemental plan will cover the 20% coinsurance cost for the Chiropractic visit. It doesn’t pay your premiums, deductibles, or non-covered services.

These also vary by plan, so be sure to let us know right away and we can get all of the details prior to you coming for your exam!

Its normal to feel this way!

Its normal to feel this way!

We are here to help!

Hopefully this brought some insight into how Chiropractic care and Medicare can work together to help you get some of your care costs covered! But we know that it can be a lot to understand, so if you have any questions, please reach out to us and we would be happy to help!

Back pain accounts for more than 264 million lost work days in one year—that’s two work days for every full-time worker in the country.

Back pain is the third most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, behind skin disorders and osteoarthritis/joint disorders.

3 Stretches for Back Pain

Back pain…

We have all had it at some point, and we all know how terrible and life impacting it can be. Laying on the couch or floor, trying not to move, hoping that we can take a deep breath without a shock to our back. To sneeze would be death. Bending over, tying our shoes, getting in and out of the car, are all dreams of a pain free past.

If you’ve had it, you know the torture and pain.

A pain we are all too familiar with 😫

A pain we are all too familiar with 😫

Our first piece of advice is always to get in touch with your Chiropractor STAT. Hopefully, like our office, your Chiropractor is available to talk over the phone and make sure that rest is the best choice and not something more serious like a trip to the ER.

At this point you should have a much needed appointment scheduled with your Chiropractor, but until then, give these stretches a try, and keep them up even after your back pain is gone.

1. Hip Mobility Stretches Using the Wall

2. The Cobra Flow

3. “T”- Rolls

Give these three very simple exercises a try the next time you have back pain, or even in between your next Chiropractic visits.

If you have any questions, or just wondering if Chiropractic is right for you, please reach out to our office and we would be happy to help!

Why do we see kids in our practice?

baby chiropractor grapevine texas.jpg

Why do we see kids, little ones, babies, children?

Children are the foundation to caring for our families. Often times, parents have lived in pain and symptoms so long they have a hard time knowing if they need help. Also, parents can easily put their needs aside for the wellness of their children. It is a truly awesome thing we do as parents, that our kids will never fully appreciate until they are parents themselves one day.

Kids & Chiropractic Just Make Sense!

When we see children, what happens is, parents notice immediate changes in their little ones. Changes they didn't even expect or know could happen. These results inspire parents to take action with their own health.

We see an incredible paradigm shift in families when kids are the entry to care. We love serving the entire family, and our goal is that everyone would see a Chiropractor regularly. But children have a unique way of showing us and proving to us just how amazing Chiropractic is.

3 Common Objections to Chiropractic

Do I really need a chiropractor?

The short answer? YES.

Look, we all have aches, pains, and injuries. If you are like most, you often wait until something hurts so bad that you have no choice but to see your chiropractor. Our goal is to break that bad habit.

Everyone, from babies to grandparents, should see a chiropractor consistently in their lives. If you have a brain and a body, then you need a chiropractor.

We could go in depth about the neuroscience behind it, but the truth is, and your friends and family would agree, is chiropractic works. So, why don't you come see us?

3 very common reasons:

time, money, coMmitment (aka do I even need it?).

Time: the investment is worth it, and if you are here consistently, then your time commitment each month is at little as 30 mins.

Money: there is always going to be a cost associated with your health. Those who invest now, reap the returns later. We meet you where you are at, take insurance, create payment plans, and only schedule what you can afford.

Commitment: Do I really need this? Committing to your care is the only way it is going to work. If you don't want to be here, don't think it will work, or are only making your spouse happy, then nothing will work. If you understand why and how your body works and needs you to be here, then you will immediately feel the difference.

We want to invite you in to see us, get the care you need, and have a doctor you can trust. Go online to www.MoultonChiropractic.com/schedule to see us soon.

8 Reasons Your Kids Need a Chiropractor

Kids and chiropractic go together like peanut butter and chocolate. There are many reasons your child should see a chiropractor. For example, do they have the same 5 senses as their parents: touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight? Of course they do, and those are controlled by the same brain body connection (aka nervous system) as their parents too. So there is no question that our kids need chiropractic just as much as Mom and Dad do.

Grapevine Chiropractor Pediatric.jpg

1. Reflux/Spit Up -  This can be caused from a number of reasons, including vertebral subluxation, cranial fault, stomach torsion, and spinal cord tension. Other causes can be allergens in a breastfeeding mom’s diet or wrong type of formula in a formula fed baby.

2. Ear Infections - Many people don’t realize your ears can be adjusted! As we get older, our ear canals start to tilt downward to allow for proper drainage; however, infant ear canals are horizontal in nature, causing them to not drain as well and be more prone to infection. A quick ear adjustment can relax the inner ear muscle, pulling on the ear canal and preventing drainage. Upper cervical subluxations and cranial faults are also common findings in kids with chronic ear infections.

3. Constipation - The nerves feeding the colon and rectal area originate from the lumbosacral region of the spine and are often misaligned, needing adjustment with symptoms of constipation. Constipation can also be due to an ileocecal valve misfiring, which takes a couple of spinal adjustments and acupressure points to correct. However, constipation is often also caused by something in the diet causing GI distress, so it becomes important to discuss potential food allergies in the baby’s or mom’s diet.

4. Trouble Latching/Feeding - An upper neck misalignment can cause a baby to not be able to turn its head as needed for breastfeeding. Cranial and palate misalignment can also be present in these kids, so appropriate cranial assessment and correction is needed. Most newborns are in need of an upper neck adjustment whether or not they have outward physical symptoms of anything. Getting through the birth canal or even being delivered via cesarean can be very strenuous on the baby’s neck, and proper realignment is necessary to ensure the nervous system can work at 100% capacity.

5. Colic - This is defined as “severe, often fluctuating pain in the abdomen caused by intestinal gas or obstruction in the intestines and suffered especially by babies.” This is a very common infant symptom and is used as a diagnosis for a crabby baby that has “no other problems,” so I believe it is commonly misdiagnosed. But this is so easy for chiropractic! Most often these babies and kids have spinal misalignments specifically in the upper neck and sacrum needing correction. It is very much related to any GI distress, along with food allergies, as discussed under “Constipation.”

6. ADHD - This is one hot topic in our culture and is becoming more and more prevalent. Our kids’ bodies have become so neurologically overloaded that it can be difficult for the nervous system to navigate simple everyday tasks. Chiropractic, by nature, balances neurology by taking tension out of the nervous system so the brain can communicate more effectively and work more efficiently. Diet plays a HUGE role in attention. A large amount of our food is processed and contains dyes, which will have neurotoxic effects on the brain. It is important to look at all stimuli coming in the child’s life, including diet, exercise, medications, amount of activity, screen time, etc. Too much stimuli will also cause trouble with attention.

7. Asthma - This is often due to an emotional component and/or mid-spine misalignments needing chiropractic correction in order for the lungs to function more efficiently. It’s important to take a look at the birth process as well. Cesarean births have a greater chance of developing asthma, so it is especially important to get these kids under chiro care. Passing through the birth canal allows for passage of important flora from the mom’s vaginal canal to the infant for population of important immune developing bacteria in the baby’s gut. Passing through the vaginal canal also squeezes the amniotic fluid out of the baby’s lungs they were “breathing” while in utero. These are in addition to many other important developmental things happening while passing through the vaginal canal.

8. Growing Pains - This can be caused from improper joint alignment not only in the spine but in the extremities. Chiropractic adjustments will align all structures so the overlying musculature can fire appropriately.

Chiropractic and Joint Pain

Can Chiropractic Help with Joint Pain?

A common question we hear from inquiries. And, the simple answer is, yes! There are so many reasons you are having joint pain, your chiropractor is going to find the root of it, not just alleviate the symptom. That way, we solve the problem, AND eliminate the symptoms.

Are there non medical options for joint pain, like back pain?

YES! The simple answer is not always the easy one. There are many options when it comes to handling your pain, some medical, some more natural, including Chiropractic. This is why our doctors spend extra time with patients answering all of their questions, helping them ease their minds with all the options out there.

Listen in as Dr. Kael shares the many benefits of Chiropractic care to resolve your joint pain!

Don't Let a Disc Herniation Slow You Down

In case you missed it, we went live on Facebook and shared a ton of great information on Joint Pain and Chiropractic Care. Learn why Chiropractic has been proven to be your BEST option for conservative care:

Did you know…

Disc bulging (and herniations) are a natural part of life and the aging process. Yes, that's right. As gravity pulls us down, we continue to age, and injuries catch up to us  - our body starts to wear down, and degenerative processes start.

As a matter of fact, degeneration of the spine begins when we are about 30 years old! If you have had an MRI of your spine, you may have hit the floor when looking at the report.

It can be scary when you see multiple levels of your spine have disc bulges, degenerative changes, and herniations. Well, don't despair, just because multiple levels of your spine are "not perfect", doesn't mean that they are all causing pain. And research shows us that you are in the right place.

Chiropractic Disc Herniation Bulge

If you are suffering from a disc bulge, or herniation that is causing pain, adjustments may be just what the doctor ordered. Here are a few quick facts you should know:

  • Over 90% of people with disc herniations were "better" or "much better" with chiropractic care.

  • Within just two weeks, over 55% of people had significant improvement with chiropractic.

So what are the next steps?

Sharing is one the best ways for you to care for your friends and family. Forward this email to a friend or family member who has been suffering from a spinal disc problem. They may be scared and unsure of what to do next. But, once they are able to understand their condition, and that conservative care is their best option, they will be able to make a smart decision about their health.
